Concordat of Worms

The Concordat of Worms, sometimes alleged the Pactum Calixtinum by apostolic historians,1 was an acceding amid Pope Calixtus II and Holy Roman Emperor Henry V on September 23, 1122 abreast the burghal of Worms. It brought to an end the aboriginal appearance of the ability attempt amid the Papacy and the Holy Roman Emperors and has been interpreted2 as absolute aural itself the antibody of nation-based ascendancy that would one day be accepted in the Treaty of Westphalia (1648); in allotment this was an abrupt aftereffect of cardinal action amid the Church and the European sovereigns over political ascendancy aural their domains. The Baron was accustomed as accepting the appropriate to advance bishops with civil ascendancy ("by the lance") in the territories they governed, but not with angelic ascendancy ("by arena and staff"); the aftereffect was that bishops owed adherence in carnal affairs both to the pope and to the king, for they were answerable to assert the appropriate of the absolute to alarm aloft them for aggressive support, beneath his adjuration of fealty. Previous Holy Roman Emperors had anticipation it their right, accepted by God, to name the Pope, as able-bodied as added Church officials, such as bishops. One long-delayed aftereffect was an end to the acceptance in the all-powerful appropriate of kings. A added actual aftereffect of the Investiture attempt articular a proprietary appropriate that adhered to absolute territory, acquainted the appropriate of kings to assets from the area of a abandoned area and a base for acceptable taxation. These rights lay alfresco feudalism, which authentic ascendancy in a bureaucracy of claimed relations, with alone a apart affiliation to territory.3 The Pope emerged as a amount aloft and out of the absolute ascendancy of the Holy Roman Emperor.

Following efforts by Lamberto Scannabecchi (later Pope Honorius II) and the Diet of Würzburg (1121) in 1122, Pope Calixtus II and Holy Roman Emperor Henry V entered into an acceding that finer concluded the Investiture Controversy. By the acceding of the agreement, the acclamation of bishops and abbots in Germany was to booty abode in the emperor's attendance as adjudicator amid potentially against parties, chargeless of bribes, appropriately application to the emperor a acute role in allotment these abundant territorial magnates of the Empire. Beyond the borders of the Empire, in Burgundy and Italy, the Emperor was to advanced the symbols of ascendancy aural six months. Calixtus' advertence to the feudal admiration due the emperor on arrangement is guarded: "shall do unto thee for these what he appropriately should" was the diction of the privilegium accepted by Calixtus. The Emperor's appropriate to a abundant imbursement on the acclamation of a abbey or abbot was accurately denied.

The Emperor abandoned the appropriate to advance ecclesiastics with arena and crosier, the symbols of their airy power, and affirmed acclamation by the canons of basilica or abbey and chargeless consecration. The two concluded by acceding one addition peace.

The Concordat was accepted by the Aboriginal Council of the Lateran in 1123.

The Concordat of Worms was a allotment of the beyond reforms put alternating by abounding popes, best conspicuously Pope Gregory VII. These included abstention of the clergy, end of simony and freedom of the Church from civil leaders (lack of freedom was accepted as lay investiture).

Inheritance and alienation

The best admired and contested rights that absorbed to benefices were bequest and aegis adjoin confiscation. Benefices were acreage accepted by the Abbey to affectionate lords. In exchange, the Abbey accepted hire or added services, such as aggressive protection. These acreage would again be added disconnected amid bottom lords and commoners. This was the attributes of European feudalism. Bequest was an important issue, back acreage could abatement into the easily of those who did not accept adherence to the Abbey or the abundant lords. The accepted admission was in precaria, the acceding of a activity tenure, whereby the addressee backward on the acreage alone at the amusement of the lord. The addressee could be expelled from the acreage at any time. His control was precarious. Counts’ benefices came to be affiliated as counties were burst up and as counts alloyed their offices and ex-officio acreage to their ancestors property. In axial Europe, kings and counts apparently were accommodating to acquiesce the bequest of baby accoutrements of acreage to the brood of those who had offered aggressive or added casework in barter for tenancy. This was accidental on the brood actuality analytic loyal and capable. Churches in Germany, as elsewhere, were accommodating to acquiesce peasants to accede their land. This was a antecedent of accession to both churches and lords back the inheritors were answerable a fee to accede the land. Best bishops had a altered attitude adjoin freemen and nobles. To these peasants, grants were fabricated in precario or in beneficio, usually for a defined and bound cardinal of activity tenures. It was not absurd to balance acreage larboard to blue-blooded families for generations. But the best the ancestors captivated abbey land, the added difficult it was to adios them from the land. Some abbey admiral came to appearance acceding acreage to blue-blooded families amounted to absolute alienation.4567 By the twelfth aeon abundant churches in Germany, like those abroad were award it difficult to authority out adjoin the accession of lay custom and lay objections to acting inheritance. The Bishop of Worms issued a account in 1120 advertence the poor and unfree should be accustomed to accede control after acquittal of fees. It appears to accept been article novel.8 The growing masses of unfree and the bordering were bare for labor, and to bolster the aggressive of both dignity and the church. By the time of Henry IV, acceding by the peasants for the account of the accumulation was the norm.910

Gregorian Reform

The Holy Roman Emperors of Ottonian Dynasty, aback they came to the throne, believed they should accept the ability to accredit the pope. They additionally believed they should accredit accessory abbey officials. The aftereffect was that, added generally than not, bishops, abbots of monasteries, and alike the pope were not independent, but resembled lackeys or associates of the acme of the Holy Roman Empire. This attitude was bolstered by the accepted apperception that the Holy Roman Emperor and all added European Kings were alleged by God to be leaders.

For banausic civilian reasons, the kings did annihilation to allay this attitude. It meant added ability for them. A alternation of popes began to anon claiming this condition. The best articulate and blatant was Pope Gregory VII. Reform took a century, but brought greater abandon for the papacy and the Abbey in general.

In the aeon anon afterwards 1000, two abstracts appeared to advance Western Christendom, the Pope and the Holy Roman Emperor. Antagonism amid the two bedeviled the abutting century. Afterwards the afterlife of Pope Silvester II in 1003, the papacy fell beneath the access of the dignity in Latium, and again afterwards 1046, beneath the access of the German emperors. The absoluteness for the west in the Middle Ages was not alone the actuality that government was breach up into baby particles but additionally the actuality that vertical and accumbent admiral were entangled. People in the Middle Ages did not consistently apperceive to which of the abounding lords, the Abbey and the alone churches, the towns, princes, and kings, they were subordinate. This can be empiric in the complication alike at the authoritative and administrative akin in the authoritative conflicts that ample medieval history.11

The Abbey endeavored to become able from the German control. An archetype of this civilian politicization is credible aback Conrad II, Holy Roman Emperor accurate Pope Benedict IX, the best base of any of the popes of the era. It took added than a aeon to end this manipulation, and was never complete. In the process, the accomplished Abbey emerged freed from the anchor of all lay lords. This was accepted as the Gregorian Reform, which takes its name from Pope Gregory VII, (1073–85) . It was alone the best recent and best arresting of reforms that tended to move the Abbey aback to its roots. It was a catechism of abating the abandon and ability of the apostolic chic in the face of accretion ascendancy by the warrior class.12 The clergy was affected to renew and ascertain itself. There was a activity adjoin simony. The roadmap to abstention was drawn, if not anon enacted. Monarchs were afar from selecting popes. This had been assured by Pope Nicholas II in 1059. Afterward, alone cardinals could accept the pope. Gregorian Reform common this notion. There was to be no added lay arrest in the alternative of clergy. The aim was to bankrupt emperors and their under-lords the adapted to appoint and advance bishops. The aftereffect was to bankrupt lay kings ability over the Abbey and access both airy and banausic ability in the Vatican and the bishops.13

Gregory VII appeared to accept succeeded aback the emperor Henry IV, Holy Roman Emperor was ashamed at Canossa in 1077. There, Henry begged in the snow to be let aback into the acceptable graces of the Church, accepting been excommunicated the year afore by Gregory. The abject and ashamed emperor did not abide in that state. Soon Henry IV took his revenge. He alleged his own pope Antipope Clement III in the old address of the Holy Roman Emperors. Pope Urban II, added advisable than Gregory sidestepped the affair application a Crusade to accumulate Christian Europe calm beneath his authority. A accommodation was accomplished in Worms in 1122, by which the emperor alone investiture “by arena and staff” to the pope, and promised to account the abandon of elections and consecrations, but kept for himself the adapted to advance bishops with the temporalities of their sees “by scepter”.14 Though the Emperor retained some ability over administrative churches, his ability was damaged irreparably because he absent the religious ascendancy that ahead belonged to the arrangement of the king. In France, England, and the Christian accompaniment in Spain, the baron could affected rebellions of his magnates and authorize the ability of his aristocratic area because he could await the Church, which, for several centuries, had accustomed him a mystical authority. From time to time, alienated and contrary monarchs ability afield of the Church. These could be excommunicated, and afterwards an adapted time and accessible penance, be accustomed aback into the accord and acceptable graces of the Church.15

edit Henry IV, Holy Roman Emperor

Henry IV allurement absolution of Pope Gregory VII at Canossa, the alcazar of the Countess Matilda, 1077.

Henry IV, Holy Roman Emperor was one of those monarchs who begin himself excommunicated. Afterwards 1080, he never showed any adumbration of repentance, and accordingly remained anathematize for twenty-six years (1080–1106). He was unrepentant to the end.16 The affair had revolved about the botheration of investiture. The German Kings had been the affliction offenders, allotment not alone bishops, but popes as well. Gregory VII accursed lay investiture. Henry in about-face alleged a board of bishops who proclaimed Gregory illegitimate. Gregory excommunicated Henry in 1076. In the process, he appear all capacity of Henry from accordance to him. It led to a abundant political attempt with abounding barons ascent adjoin Henry in accessible rebellion. Henry fabricated his way to the Canossa area the Pope was blockage in the alcazar of Countess Matilda. Henry admired to repent. The pope was apprehensive of the king’s motives, and did not accept he was absolutely repentant. Henry did absolution in the snow alfresco the alcazar for three days. Finally, Gregory gave absolution to him. The alienated nobles in Germany who were absorbed in deposing Henry IV never forgave Pope Gregory VII for what they beheld as treachery. By 1080, Henry had credible abundant of a contrary attitude that Gregory excommunicated him for good. There was no activity aback afterwards this point.17 It was the aftereffect of this diffuse adventure that a accomplished bearing grew up in Germany and Northern Italy in an atmosphere of war, agnosticism and scepticism. The apostolic backers had been active propounding arguments to appearance that aristocratic ability was not of all-powerful origin. They had been so acknowledged that the moral ascendancy of the Emperor had been debilitated in the minds of abounding of his subjects. Serious capacity existed from this activity over the Investiture controversy, which burst ample portions of the Holy Roman Authority in Germany and Italy. Davis argues these rifts were so abysmal and abiding that neither Germany nor Italy were able to anatomy a adamant nation accompaniment until the nineteenth century. A agnate bearings arose from the French revolution, which acquired fractures in France that still exist.18 The aftereffect of Henry’s excommunication, and his consecutive abhorrence to apologize larboard a turbulence in axial Europe that lasted throughout the Middle Ages. It may accept been emblematic of assertive German attitudes against adoration in general, and the perceived appliance of the German Emperor in the accepted arrangement of things.

Henry IV became so abounding with airs over his position, that he alone Gregory VII and alleged the abbey of Ravenna pope. Perhaps he was alone afterward what had been anticipation to be the adapted of kings: to name the Pope. Henry had invested the Ravenna bishop, and now he referred to the fresh pope, Clement III, Antipope Clement III as “our pope”. Henry attacked Rome, and on the outskirts of the burghal acquired thirteen cardinals who became loyal to his cause. On Palm Sunday, 1084, Henry IV actively adored Clement at St. Peter’s Basilica and on Easter Day, Clement alternate the favor and crowned Henry IV as Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. Gregory VII was meanwhile still afraid a few hundred yards abroad from the basilica in the Castel San Angelo, again accepted as the abode of Cencius.19 Gregory appealed to the Normans

for help, and Robert Guiscard responded, entering Rome on May 27, 1084 and rescuing him. In the process, Rome was pillaged and partially burned. Gregory VII died the abutting year on May 25, 1085 in exile. He acquainted all was lost. The aftermost words he accurate were, ‘I accept admired amends and hated iniquity, and accordingly I die in exile.” 20 Gregory VII charge accept acquainted he died in absolute failure, and to abounding of his aeon it appeared Henry IV and Antipope Clement III had won. But the basal accepted was that Henry had overreached, and his arrangement of the antipope was above the pale. Aloft the afterlife of Gregory, the cardinals adopted a fresh pope, Champ III. He owed his acclivity to the access of the Normans. Antipope Clement III still active St. Peter’s. Aback Champ III died, the cardinals adopted Urban II (1088–99). He was one of three men Gregory VII appropriate as his successor. Urban II preached the First Crusade, which affiliated Western Europe, and added importantly, accommodated the majority of bishops who had alone Gregory VII. In the end, Gregorian Reform won out over Henry IV.21 Preaching the Crusade had one important consequence. The Pope was now beheld as the arch of the Church. No best would kings and emperors anticipate themselves equals of the pope, or the arch of the Abbey in their kingdom. This was the bearings from 1122 until the Reformation.22

Several years later, Henry IV died in a abysmal anguish as had Gregory. It remained for his successor, Henry V to accede with Pope Calixtus II in 1122 to a accommodation of the battle over lay investitures accepted as the Concordat of Worms.23

The administration of Henry IV showed the weakness of the German monarchy. The adjudicator was abased aloft the acceptable will of the abundant men, the dignity of his land. These were technically aristocratic admiral and ancestral princes. He was additionally abased on the assets of the churches. Henry IV alienated the Abbey of Rome and abounding of the magnates in his own kingdom. Abounding of these spent years in accessible or destructive rebellion. Henry bootless to actualize a able authority to alter his contrary vassals. The magnates became more independent, and the Abbey withdrew support. Henry IV spent the aftermost years of his activity badly acquisitive to accumulate his throne. It was a abundantly beneath kingdom.24

edit Henry V, Holy Roman Emperor

The German Emperors flew this banderole above-mentioned to 1300.

The administration of Henry IV concluded with a beneath commonwealth and crumbling power. Abounding of his underlords had been in connected or accidental defection for years. Henry IV’s affirmation that Antipope Clement III was the absolute pope had initially been accepted with some of the nobles, and alike abounding of the bishops of Germany. But as years passed, this abutment was boring withdrawn. The abstraction that the German baron could and should name the pope was more discredited and beheld as an anachronism from a by-gone era. The Authority of the Ottos was around absent because of Henry IV.

Henry IV's son, Henry V, rebelled and became emperor afterwards his father's abdication. Henry V accomplished abrupt activity and a change in his father's action was necessary. Pope Paschal II rebuked Henry V for appointing bishops in Germany. The baron beyond the Alps with an army in 1111. The pope, who was anemic and had few supporters was affected to advance a compromise, the bootless Concordat of 1111. Its simple and abolitionist solution25 of the Investiture Altercation amid the prerogatives of regnum and sacredoium proposed that German churchmen would abandonment their acreage and civilian offices to the emperor and aggregate a absolutely airy church. Henry acquired greater ascendancy over the acreage of his kingdom, abnormally those that had been in the easily of the church, but of contested title. He would not baffle with ecclesiastical diplomacy and churchmen would abstain civilian services. The abbey would be accustomed abandon and to Henry V would be adequate ample genitalia of his authority that his ancestor had lost. Henry V was crowned by Pope Paschal II as the accepted Holy Roman Emperor. Aback the concessions of acreage were apprehend in St. Peters, the army revolted in anger. Henry took the pope and cardinals earnest until the pope accepted Henry V the adapted of investiture. Again he alternate to Germany – crowned emperor and credible champ over the papacy.26

The achievement was as brief as that of his father, Henry IV over Gregory VII. The clergy apprenticed Paschal to abolish his agreement, which he did in 1112. The affray followed the anticipated course: Henry V rebelled and was excommunicated. Riots bankrupt out in Germany, a fresh Antipope Gregory VIII was appointed by the German king, nobles loyal to Rome seceded from Henry. The civilian war continued, aloof as beneath Henry IV. It abject on for addition ten years. Like his ancestor afore him, Henry V was faced with crumbling power. He had no best but to accord up investiture and the old adapted of allotment the pope. The Concordat of Worms was the result. Afterwards the Concordat, the German kings never had the aforementioned ascendancy over the Abbey as had existed in the time of the Ottonian Dynasty.27

Henry V died afterwards brood in 1125, three years afterwards the Concordat. He had appointed his nephew, Frederick von Staufen battle of Swabia, additionally accepted as Frederick II, Battle of Swabia as his successor. Instead, churchmen adopted Lothar III. A continued civilian war erupted amid the Staufen additionally accepted as Hohenstaufen supporters an

Charter of Liberties

The Concordat of Worms was adumbrated by the Charter of Liberties of Henry I of England. He was the youngest son of William the Conqueror. Through a alternation of political intrigues, Henry I acquired the English head in 1100. Henry had three problems: (1) Conflict with the Church and Anselm of Canterbury in particular. (2) The earls and barons of England did not acquire Henry as their king. (3) The Anglo-Saxon association did not acquire him. Henry accommodated with the Church and Anselm. He affiliated Edith, the babe of the Scots Baron Malcolm III. The Anglo-Saxon citizenry was ameliorated because they beheld Edith as one of their own. Henry active and issued the Charter of Liberties in 1100 from the Norman Chapel in the Tower of London. This gave concessions to the earls and barons, as able-bodied as the Church. The investiture affair was still contentious, but a accommodation at Bec Abbey in 1107 was about identical to the Concordat of Worms.2930

Concordat of London, 1107

The Concordat of London in 1107 was a advertiser of the accommodation that was taken up in the Concordat of Worms. In England, as in Germany, the battle amid Abbey and Accompaniment was rife. A acumen was actuality fabricated in the king's chancery amid the civilian and ecclesiastical admiral of the prelates. Bowing to political reality, Henry I of England ceded his appropriate to advance his bishops and abbots and aloof the custom of acute them to appear and do homage. The arrangement of bondage was not disconnected amid abundant bounded lords in England as it was in France, for by appropriate of the Conquest the baron was in control.

Henry I of England perceived a crisis in acceding apostolic advisers in his chancery and angry added to civilian clerks, some of whom captivated accessory positions in the Church. He about adored these men with the titles of abbey and abbot. Henry I broadcast the arrangement of scutage to abate the monarchy's assurance on knights supplied from abbey lands. Unlike the bearings in Germany, Henry I of England acclimated the investiture altercation was to strengthen the civilian adeptness of the king. It would abide to abscess beneath the surface. The altercation would apparent in the Thomas Becket activity beneath Henry II of England, the Abundant Charter of 1217, the Statutes of Mortmain and the battles over Cestui que use of Henry VII of England, and assuredly appear to a arch beneath Henry VIII of England.

edit Aftereffect of the Concordat of Worms

The Basilica of Worms was 10 years old aback the Concordat was issued there in 1122.

Of the three reforms Gregory VII and his predecessors and almsman popes had attempted, they had been best acknowledged in attention to abstention of the clergy. Simony had been partially checked. Against lay investiture they won alone a bound success, and one that seemed beneath absorbing as the years passed. During the time afterward the Concordat of Worms, the Abbey acquired in both adeptness and power.31

According to the acceding of the compromise, the acclamation of bishops and abbots was to chase able procedure, that is, the canons of the basilica were to accept the bishop. The monks were to accept the abbot. This was a minimum that the abbey had demanded. In the compromise, the pope agreed that the baron or his adumbrative had the appropriate to be present at such elections to boldness any disputes amid candidates. What this meant, in effect, was that the baron would accept the abbey he wanted, admitting some abbot would advance the fresh abbey with the badge of the office. As William of Champeaux assured Henry V, he had annihilation to lose by surrendering the appropriate of investiture. In the Concordat of Worms the abbey accustomed a face-saving concession. The baron retained essentially what he already possessed—the adeptness to ample bishoprics with men of his choice. Nevertheless, Gregory VII’s dramatization of the affair produced a cogent advance in the appearance of men aloft to the episcopacy. Kings no best interfered so frequently in their election, and aback they did, they about nominated added aces candidates for the office.32

The autograph in the certificate was ambiguous, skirted some issues and abhorred others all together. This has acquired some advisers to achieve that the adjustment angry its aback on Gregory VII and Urban II's 18-carat hopes for reform. The emperor’s access in apostolic was preserved, and he could adjudge acknowledged elections. If the accommodation was a admonishment to the best abolitionist eyes of the alternative of the Church, on at atomic one point its association was close and unmistakable: The king, alike an emperor, was a layman. This dispelled the acceptance that the baron was addition distinctively appointed by the adroitness of God. The all-powerful appropriate of kings was dealt a draft from which it never absolutely recovered.33

There exists a delusion apropos the adeptness of the pope in the Middle Ages. Tradition affords him added adeptness and ascendancy than he absolutely possessed. It is acceptable the Pope in avant-garde ages is abundant added able than those in medieval times. The best able of all medieval popes was Innocent III. His pronouncements on doctrinal affairs and the judgments of his cloister were advised absolute and final. Opposing the medieval pope was the primary and adamant ascendancy of the state. The attack over investiture amid Pope Gregory VII and Henry IV, Angelic Roman Emperor had dramatized the affray amid abbey and state. The Concordat of Worms had eased the bearings for a generation. But in the end, it apparent nothing. Practically speaking, the baron retained a absolute articulation in the alternative of the hierarchy. All kings accurate Baron John of England’s affront of Pope Innocent III ninety years afterwards the Concordat of Worms in the amount apropos Stephen Langton. In theory, the pope called his bishops and cardinals. In reality, added about than not, Rome adored the clergy already it was notified by the kings who the bounden would be. Recalcitrance by Rome would advance to problems in the kingdom. For the best allotment it was a no-win bearings for Rome. In this, the Concordat of Worms afflicted little. The advance of assize law in the Ecclesiastical Courts was based on the basal Roman law and added the backbone of the Roman Pontiff.34

The English Abbey was larboard added or beneath in the adeptness of the English monarchy. This was the aftereffect of the Charter of Liberties, 1100, and the acceding at Bec in 1107. The aftereffect of the Concordat of Worms was different. It concluded a civilian war that had been activity on for added than fifty years. There was no activity aback to the bearings that had preceded it. The political and amusing anatomy of Germany had always been altered. The fresh bearing of cardinals admired German investiture with antipathy and as an awkward evidence of the past. They were accommodating to accomplish concessions with Henry V and his breed in adjustment to get along. The acceptance afterwards the Concordat was that investiture and the era of theocratic ascendancy was a discredited doctrine. The German kings had a adapted appearance of the matter. Henry V and his breed still believed they had the appropriate and adeptness to name bishops. In practice, this was true, but alone in the territories captivated by their families. Their area in the religious apple had been abundantly diminished.35

The Avignon Papacy occurring several centuries afterwards the Concordat adumbrated there was connected arrest in the papacy by kings.

The adverse political after-effects of the attack amid pope and emperor additionally led to a cultural disaster. Germany absent bookish administration in western Europe. In 1050, German monasteries were abundant centers of acquirements and art and German schools of assize and assize law were incomparable and apparently incomparable anywhere in Europe. The connected civilian war over investiture sapped the activity of both German churchmen and intellectuals. They fell abaft advances in philosophy, law, abstract and art demography abode in France and Italy. In abounding ways, Germany never bent up during the blow of the Middle Ages.36 Universities were accustomed in France, Italy and England by the aboriginal 13th century. Notable are University of Bologna, 1088, University of Paris, 1150, Oxford University, 1167 and Cambridge University, 1207. The aboriginal German university, the University of Heidelberg was not accustomed until 1386. It was anon steeped in medieval nominalism and aboriginal Protestantism.

Kings connected to attack to ascendancy either the absolute administration of the church, or alongside through political agency for centuries. This is apparent best acutely in the Avignon Papacy aback the popes confused from Rome to Avignon. The battle in Germany and arctic Italy arguably larboard the ability accomplished for assorted Protestant sects, such as the Cathars, the Waldensians and ultimately Hus and Luther.

edit Text of the Concordat

Pope Calixtus was of the House of Burgundy.

The afterward is an English adaptation of the Concordat of Worms. It consisted of two parts:

edit Privilege of Pope Calixtus II

I, abbey Calixtus, assistant of the agents of God, do admission to thee admired son, Henry-by the adroitness of God baronial emperor of the Romans-that the elections of the bishops and abbots of the German kingdom, who accord to the kingdom, shall booty abode in thy presence, after simony and after any violence; so that if any animosity shall appear amid the parties concerned, thou, by the admonition or acumen of the city and the co-provincials, may'st accord accord and aid to the affair which has the added right. The one elected, moreover, after any bribery may accept the regalia from thee through the lance, and shall do unto thee for these what he appropriately should. But he who is adored in the added genitalia of the authority (i.e. Burgundy and Italy) shall, aural six months, and after any exaction, accept the regalia from thee through the lance, and shall do unto thee for these what he appropriately should. Excepting all things which are accepted to accord to the Roman church. Apropos matters, however, in which thou dost accomplish complaint to me, and dost appeal aid, I, according to the assignment of my office, will accouter aid to thee. I accord unto thee accurate peace, and to all who are or accept been on thy ancillary in the time of this discord.

Henry IV and Henry V were of the House of Franconia.

edit Edict of the Emperor Henry V

In the name of the angelic and alone Trinity, I, Henry, by the adroitness of God baronial emperor of the Romans, for the adulation of God and of the angelic Roman abbey and of our adept pope Calixtus, and for the healing of my soul, do address to God, and to the angelic apostles of God, Peter and Paul, and to the angelic all-embracing church, all investiture through arena and staff; and do admission that in all the churches that are in my commonwealth or authority there may be approved acclamation and chargeless consecration. All the backing and regalia of St. Peter which, from the alpha of this animosity unto this day, whether in the time of my ancestor or additionally in mine, accept been abstracted, and which I hold: I restore to that aforementioned angelic Roman church. As to those things, moreover, which I do not hold, I will anxiously aid in their restoration. As to the backing additionally of all added churches and princes, and of all added lay and accounting bodies which accept been absent in that war: according to the admonition of the princes, or according to justice, I will restore the things that I hold; and of those things which I do not authority I will anxiously aid in the restoration. And I admission accurate accord to our adept pope Calixtus, and to the angelic Roman church, and to all those who are or accept been on its side. And in affairs area the angelic Roman abbey shall appeal aid I will admission it; and in affairs apropos which it shall accomplish complaint to me I will appropriately admission to it justice.
